Rome, January 8 – The spread between Italian and German 10-year bond yields, a gauge of Italy’s borrowing costs and of market confidence in the Italian economy, closed steady on 155 points Monday with the yield also steady at 1.97%. The lower the spread is, the better it is for the Italian economy and debt-servicing costs. The spread rose above 200 points earlier this year on EU populist fears.

Padoan says ready to run in general election (3)

Brussels, January 8 – Economy Minister Pier Carlo Padoan said Monday he was ready to run for parliament in the March 4 general election. “There have been talks and I made myself available,” said Padoan, answering a question on whether he had been asked to stand. Democratic Party (PD) leader and ex-premier Matteo Renzi said later Tuesday he had asked Padoan to run.

Beached whale carcass to be buried in Sardinia

Sorso, January 8 – A seven-tonne beached whale that died on Sardinia’s Platamona beach will be buried in the industrial area of Sorso at the weekend, while its skeleton, which has already completely separated from its body, will go on display in an exhibition space still to be determined in the nearby area. Operations to move the massive whale carcass should begin as at the end of this week, sources said Monday. Sorso Mayor Giuseppe Morghen said the city government has already issued a call for tenders to choose a moving company to support the experts who will handle the whale carcass. That contract is expected to be awarded on Wednesday, he said.

Turin doctor missing in Panama ‘dead’ say family

Turin, January 8 – A Turin doctor who went missing in Panama in late November is dead, his family said Monday. Virginia Sanchesi, the former wife of Furio Ferrari, and Ferrari’s daughter Elodie said the 70-year-old, who had been living in central America for years, had died. They asked the Italian foreign ministry to “help us understand what happened”.

Ruggeri and J-Ax shift from SIAE to Soundreef

Milan, January 8 – It was April 2016 when the Italian rapper Fedez announced that he would be switching from SIAE, the Italian royalties clearinghouse for copyrighted material, to Soundreef, a start-up company founded by Davide D’Atri and Francesco Danieli in London in 2011 to break SIAE’s monopoly. Few at that time knew anything about the company. Gigi D’Alessio, who left immediately after Fedez, proclaimed at that time that “many will follow me”. He has been proven right: over 11,000 have since followed in his footsteps, including such well-known figures as Fabio Rovazzi, Nesli and Noyz Narcos. Now, two-time Sanremo winner Enrico Ruggeri and the rapper J-Ax have also left SIAE for Soundreef. While J-Ax’s decision was to be expected due to his close friendship with Fedez, Ruggeri’s strongly surprised SIAE. The singer thanked the company for the many years together. “We are the ones who should thank ‘Maestro Ruggeri’ for the very many years in which he was are associate and who in 2016,” SIAE director general Gaetano Blandini said, “was among the first thousand signatories of the SIAE letter to defend copyright law. Precisely because we have had the chance to get to know the sensitivity of Enrico Ruggeri in the battles to protect copyright, his choice seems incomprehensible to us.” Soundreef, Blandini said “according to the regulations in force, is operating illegitimately in our country, in which intermediation activities concerning copyright law are restricted to organizations like SIAE that are non-profit and managed by their associates.” Chairman Filippo Sugar said that SIAE “is and will continue to be a non profit company governed by its own associates, and which cannot – and above all does not want to – get involved in purchasing campaigns. SIAE is in line with the regulations in force, in line with the Barnier directive and thus does not discriminate between its associates, treating them all the same.” Soundreef – which now boasts over 11,000 Italian authors and publishers signed up to it, with a 25% growth over the past 12 months – is meanwhile celebrating Ruggeri’s choice. “Enrico Ruggeri’s arrival,” D’Atri said, “is a great honor for us. Working with his repertoire renders us happy and proud of the direction we have taken and is proof of our company’s progress.” As often happens, “everything began from a meeting between Soundreef’s ‘youth’,” Ruggeri said. “I found enthusiasm, a combative attitude towards challenges and the desire to communicate plans, qualities that I have always sought out in the people with whom I work. It is not an ‘agency’; it is a group of people with a face and a voice. This is why I decided” to work with them. Some, on the other hand, have decided to shift from Soundreef to SIAE, such as the pianist Andrea Tonoli. Tonoli has composed soundtracks for films, documentaries and television commercials, as well as having worked for National Geographic.

Ferrero raises US Nestlé bar offer (4)

New York, January 8 – Ferrero of Italy and Hershey of the US have presented their final offers for Nestle’s US chocolate bars, CNBC said Monday. Ferrero was said to be favoured because it had made a “more aggressive” bid, it said. The bids are said to be between 2 and 2.5 billion dollars. A decision is expected in a week’s time. The Financial Times also said Monday that Ferrero was in pole position for the US Nestlé bars. It also said the private equity company Rhone Capital was in the running.

Rome council blasts ‘speculation’ over trash woes (3)

Rome, January 8 – City of Rome Environment Chief Pinuccia Montanari on Monday attacked the centre-left Democratic Party as a row over the capital’s trash woes rumbled on. “Unlike (ex-premier Matteo) Renzi and the PD, we are not staging an election campaign but we are thinking of the interests of the people,” Montanari, an member of the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement’s (M5S) city executive, said on Facebook. “There is the suspicion that some want to speculate, economically and politically, on the skin on the citizens and propose fees that are not market rates”. Earlier on Monday, Renzi blasted the M5S Rome executive for not sorting out the trash situation in the capital, saying it had refused offers of help from Emilia-Romagna and Abruzzo, regions governed by the PD. The Abruzzo regional government confirmed Monday evening it had not received any request for help from Rome city council or the municipal waste company AMA. It said it was “disconcerted” by the AMA CEO’s claim that there had been a U-turn in plans to take trash from Emilia Romagna to Abruzzo.

Boy, 14, killed handling dad’s hunting rifle

Nuoro, January 8 – A 14-year-old boy was killed Monday when a shot went off from his dad’s hunting rifle as he was handling it at home in Galtelli near Nuoro on Sardinia. The boy’s father is the mayor of the village of Giovanni Santo Porcu. He was shot in the head.

Cecilia Gasdia to be new Verona Arena chief

Verona, January 8 – Cecilia Gasdia will be the new superintendent of the Verona Arena foundation, sources said Monday. They said the soprano was the unanimous pick of the foundation’s board, which met under Verona Mayor Federico Sboarina Monday. Gasdia, 57, a Verona native, has sung over 90 roles in a 30-year career. Since 2015 she has run Verona’s Opera Academy.
